On June 7, 2018, I attended Coyotes in Two Directions Event by Sarah Rosalena Brady at Art-Sci Center Gallery at UCLA. This event was somewhat special for me because when I first looked around the exhibition, I had no idea what they were, and what they represented. At first I thought I came to the wrong place. When someone guided me that this was the correct spot, I slowly looked around and read the description on the website. “Coyotes in Two Directions examines the signifier of the trickster and shapeshifter as a symbolic metaphor to create techno-hybrid forms. Coyotes are symbolic in mythology and present in Western urban landscapes as one of the most successful animals surviving the Anthropocene. Emergent forms are employed through sculpture, automata, and 3D scans “(Coyotes in Two Directions). After reading this I slowly understood what the art works represented, However, I still had no idea what coyote was. (Me at the Coyotes in Two Directions) “The coyote appears

On May 31, 2018, I attended UCLA Design Media Arts presents Weak or No Signal, the final MFA showcase of the graduating class of 2018 which was located at the New Wight Gallery at UCLA’s Broad Art Center. This event was for Cannily co-opting a large range of vocabularies the show articulates contemporary subject matters, from hyper-mediated social relationships to artificial intelligence; technological utopianism; and the increasing fallibility of the image. The work draws from pop imagery, pseudoscience, native American and Mexican representations, corporate aesthetics and cinema, immersing the viewer into unfamiliar territory. Immersive theater, virtual reality and exotic animals comprise some of the more unexpected encounters of this exhibition (Weak or No Signal MFA). Me at the Weak or No Signal Event When I saw Latent Space: Facile Substance by A M Chung, I had to stop and watch this art piece very closely because everything was so small and compact. I liked how she de

Me at the HOX ZODIAC Event On May 26th, I went to HOX ZODIAC at Building Bridges Art Exchange Center. Before I went to the event, I had no idea what HOX ZODIAC was. However, when I saw the zodiac calendar, I knew what they were. This event was about Hox gene evolved into a “dinner” and see the deep relationship with animals as companions, food and lab experiment. The artist and scientist seek to bring into the public this relationship in a way that expands the idea of the zodiac and puts the humans into the role of an animal that they have been assigned culturally (Hox Zodiac). HOX ZODIAC Calendar  Pig Zodiac Although we got all different personality and looks, Chinese Zodiac categorized by 12 animals to represent people’s tendencies. Because I was born in 1995, my animal is the pig in Chinese Zhu Zi. Pig was Yin, water element, black color, winter season, north direction, cold diseases, taste salty, planet Mercury, Sanjiao organ, and Yellow Dragon for the heavenl

Week 9: Space + Art

이미지
This week's lecture was beyond the Earth: the Space.  Like Professor Vesna said, this week's topic is a culmination of all the topics we have covered up to this point because space is so vast and incorporates a number of different subtopics within it (Vesna).  I especially enjoyed learning about the history of space, specifically things like the atomic bomb, the Cold War, the Space Race, Star Wars!  THE ART OF NEGATIVE SPACE In this week's lecture Professor Vesna talked about the Space Race, and to me this is an incredibly important period in American history. Because of the Space Race and the Cold War, the United States has asserted its superpower status in the world after knocking off the rival that was the USSR.  Between Sputnik, the Apollo missions, and many other advances, the US and the USSR both put large sums of money into the Space Race.  Many argue that this was a waste of money, but because of this exploration we made many advances in modern technolo

Week 8: NanoTech + Art

Nanotechnology involves tiny units of measurements, which ultimately create smaller and smaller inventions. This science is done on molecular levels with atomic particles, unable to be seen by the naked eye.  According to Victoria Vesna’s intro to this week’s topic, nanotech “introduces a new area of life beyond what we know, pushing us over the edge into the 21 st  century.” Dr. Gimzewski, a Nano scientist, says that nanotechnology has the “potential to change the world- both in economic and social values.” The combination of art and science has no boundaries and continues to grow into technologies we cannot even imagine or predict.   The Art of Nanotech Nanotech artist named Christian Orfescu’s day job involves an analytical laboratory at Caleb Technology. Orfescu is incredibly passionate about his craft, and about nanotechnology, but he hopes to expand the curiosity behind nanotechnology, considering over 70 percent in the U.S. use products incorporating nanotechnology. O

Week 7: Neuroscience+ Art

Neuroscience is of course the study of the brain, but many of us often forget about the beauty and the art behind the study of our conscience and how our brain functions. Our brain is the core of our existence, and it's what makes each one of us the beautiful creatures that we are. Everyone’s DNA is different. Color, tone, size, symmetry, fingerprints etc. The brain is similar in this regard. Biologically the human brain is very similar in every person; however, the way they are expressed is extremely different. Some people are left side dominate, while others are right. Some are good at math, while some are better at literature. Some are athletic, some are musical. These all stem from the brain and personality of each individual.  The origin of personality is a combination of the both nature and nurture. Now, artists like Karen Norberg and Margerie Taylor are using their fixation on the human brain to create art from its physical beauty and wonder. These artists actually used
