Event 3
Me at the HOX ZODIAC Event |
On May 26th, I went to HOX ZODIAC at
Building Bridges Art Exchange Center. Before I went to the event, I had no idea
what HOX ZODIAC was. However, when I saw the zodiac calendar, I knew what they
were. This event was about Hox gene evolved into a “dinner” and see the deep
relationship with animals as companions, food and lab experiment. The artist
and scientist seek to bring into the public this relationship in a way that
expands the idea of the zodiac and puts the humans into the role of an animal
that they have been assigned culturally (Hox Zodiac).

Pig Zodiac |
Although we got all different personality
and looks, Chinese Zodiac categorized by 12 animals to represent people’s
tendencies. Because I was born in 1995, my animal is the pig in Chinese Zhu Zi.
Pig was Yin, water element, black color, winter season, north direction, cold
diseases, taste salty, planet Mercury, Sanjiao organ, and Yellow Dragon for the
heavenly creature.
Pigs are highly intelligent and social
creatures that have been used in a wide variety of research protocols, most
notably for cardiovascular research. Some researchers use pigs to model human
skin, and thus pigs have been subjected to dermatological studies involving
wound healing and plastic surgery procedures. This is related to topic that we
learned in week 4: MedTech + Art and week 6: Biotech + Art. From World War 1,
the plastic surgery was for physical reconstructive to give mold and form for
lost parts of people’s face. Nowadays, pigs play big role in the plastic
surgery because new surgical techniques are developed and practiced on pigs
because their organs are a similar size to those of humans.
Dog Zodiac |
It was very interesting that all 12
animals represent body organs. As I mentioned, pig represents sanjiao organ
which is the triple burner in traditional Chinese medicine controls metabolism.
Because metabolism happens in the stomach and liver, the image of the pig somewhat
looked like liver/stomach organ part. Dog, the 11th animal, represented pericardium
which is the membranous sac enclosing the heart. I liked how each animal
represented organs and the image of them was similar to the organs which is
very creative artistic aspect.
I would definitely recommend my classmates
to attend this event, because not only 12 animals were represented in artistic
ways, but also in scientific ways. I also liked how people who were serving the
foods and guiding this event were wearing doctor gown because we are dealing
with ‘organs.’ Before the midterm was about dealing with more science aspects
of art, but now we are more interested in biological aspects of arts. For the
final, I will try to mix science, biology, and art together to make great work.
